Our Book Fair is going on right now.  New this year is the ability to order over the Internet.  I know it is tough to shop during school hours, here is a great solution.  They also have additional choices that aren't at our book fair, for example many of the popular series; The Among series by Margaret Peterson Haddix and the Hunger Games.  Thanks for supporting our school

January 30 - February 3

Hello Parents and Students,

Sorry I missed last week, we have been so busy in class that I actually forgot to update the classroom blog.

We will be taking the WRITING test on Wednesday, February 1 from 9:15-11:15.  I doubt that it will take that long but we have the computer lap scheduled, just in case someone needs it.  On that day I will be providing lunch for the students. We have talked about this in class and I don't want them to have to worry about anything except putting forth 100% effort towards their writing.  I feel very confident that everyone will do well because of the  incredible writing I have seen in class.

We also celebrated our Box Top party on Friday, January 27.  Thanks so much Mrs. Mahlin for our pizza from Manny and Olgas as well as drinks and cookies.  Keep sending those Box Tops in so that we are able to win for the second contest at the end of the year.

Our field trip to Kidz Court was FABULOUS.  All of the students had stellar behavior.  We were complimented many times from the bailiffs and court employees.  The play that the students participated in was worthy of an Oscar.  It is a challenge to get up in front of your peers let alone parents, and bailiffs.  These students portrayed each character with confidence.  The best class I have seen so far.  Congratulations on a job well done!!!
The students also handled themselves like young adults when they listened to the inmates and the choices they had made that led them to their incarceration.  This was an invaluable lesson that I hope they carry with them throughout their lives.  Thanks to all the parents that were able to make this important field trip with us.

Our second trimester is coming to a close, please check in with your student to see where they are at on their Great American Awards Program.  All presentations need to be done by February 14 as well as all correct and returns.  Thanks for your support with this.

January 9-13

Welcome back!!!
I hope everyone had an amazing break with their families and friends.  We have started off the week running.
In math:  We have been working on adding fractions with unlike denominators.  I have been impressed with how well everyone is doing with this challenging concept.  We will take a final test on Friday and then begin subtracting fractions with unlike denominators on Monday.

Our Writing Test date has changed to February 1, this change has allowed us more time in the computer lab to take the test.  Please make sure your child is well rested and has a great breakfast before they get here to conqueror this assessment!  I have no doubts that they will do well.
In class this week we have been working on IDEAS.  We listened to Toby Keith's "Made in America" and discussed what the main idea was and how he backed that idea up with incredible details that were creative and multi-layered.  Students had the opportunity to bring in their favorite song lyrics and we will be working in teams to see how those songs follow one idea and what details the writer used to convey that idea.

We have also worked on informative/explanatory prompts that have been based on common science principles.   For example students were give a picture of ice, water and steam and asked to explain how water changes states.  We will continue to develop this paper throughout the week.  Be sure to ask to see their final product.

Our Kidz Court field trip will be on January 24.  We will leave school around 10:30 and be back around 2:00.  I am asking that students dress their best!  Remember we will be going through the metal detectors in the court house so keep that in mind before throwing on that big belt buckle!!!  The parts for our play have been assigned and am looking forward to seeing the characters come alive in the reinactment.

December 18-23

Wow, Winter Break is fast approaching.  I apologize for not posting earlier in the week.  Many students have brought in gifts for our "class gift exchange."  I will have extras just in case someone forgets!  We will be doing our gift exchange on Friday.
In writing this week we wrote persuasive essays to Mrs. Walters and Dr. Truax.  I had the opportunity to sit down with both of them and share these incredible essays with them.  We are well on our way to passing the writing test!!!  Both of them were very persuaded!  We will be watching Elf on Friday as a result of all our hard work.
When we return we will continue working on mastering informative, persuasive and narrative writing formats.  Adding and subtracting fractions will also be our focus.  In addition to that I will be starting a unit on landforms.  If you have any pictures/books of landforms please send them in so we can display them during this unit.
Mrs. Waters is also blogging about how fabulous Spanish Springs Elementary School is.  When you have the opportunity please check it out! http://otterupdates.blogspot.com

I appreciate all the hard work the students did over the November break and there will be nothing like that over the Winter Break.  However, I encourage students to work on their Great American Awards packet.  January and February are busy months in here and if they don't have them done it can feel a bit overwhelming.

Enjoy your families over the two week holiday.  Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
Thanks for sharing your incredible kids with me everyday!

Please check your calenders for January 30.  That is the day we will be taking the writing test.  We are scheduled in the 9:15-10:30 slot.  If by chance your child has a medical or dental appointment it would be greatly appreciated if you could reschedule so that they don't miss this important test.  Testing as a class will be easier than doing it as an individual.

December 12-16

In math this week we have been working hard on factoring, least common denominator, greatest common factors and prime factorization.  We started off by taking a review test of what we did last week.  After grading it, I noticed that we still needed to review these concepts.  I have attached worksheets to the back of the test.  These worksheets will be due by Thursday (Dec 15) of this week.

Next week we will continue to move on to adding fractions.

This week we will begin taking a practice writing test in the computer lab.  This practice test will simulate exactly what the testing format will look like.  This is a great opportunity for our students to become familiar with this format before the big Writing Test which will be January 30 or 31.

This Wednesday we will begin working on a new vocabulary format.  Each set of words will be passed out on Wednesday and then tested on Tuesday.  Each week students will watch a vocabulary rap as a class and then have a worksheet packet that will be due on Tuesday, so that they have the packet to study from all week long.   You can expect to see this same format when we return in January.  Be sure to have your child study all week long with a big review on Monday nights.

Again please contact me through e-mail if you have any questions.  eretzer@washoeschools.net
