December 18-23

Wow, Winter Break is fast approaching.  I apologize for not posting earlier in the week.  Many students have brought in gifts for our "class gift exchange."  I will have extras just in case someone forgets!  We will be doing our gift exchange on Friday.
In writing this week we wrote persuasive essays to Mrs. Walters and Dr. Truax.  I had the opportunity to sit down with both of them and share these incredible essays with them.  We are well on our way to passing the writing test!!!  Both of them were very persuaded!  We will be watching Elf on Friday as a result of all our hard work.
When we return we will continue working on mastering informative, persuasive and narrative writing formats.  Adding and subtracting fractions will also be our focus.  In addition to that I will be starting a unit on landforms.  If you have any pictures/books of landforms please send them in so we can display them during this unit.
Mrs. Waters is also blogging about how fabulous Spanish Springs Elementary School is.  When you have the opportunity please check it out! http://otterupdates.blogspot.com

I appreciate all the hard work the students did over the November break and there will be nothing like that over the Winter Break.  However, I encourage students to work on their Great American Awards packet.  January and February are busy months in here and if they don't have them done it can feel a bit overwhelming.

Enjoy your families over the two week holiday.  Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
Thanks for sharing your incredible kids with me everyday!

Please check your calenders for January 30.  That is the day we will be taking the writing test.  We are scheduled in the 9:15-10:30 slot.  If by chance your child has a medical or dental appointment it would be greatly appreciated if you could reschedule so that they don't miss this important test.  Testing as a class will be easier than doing it as an individual.

December 12-16

In math this week we have been working hard on factoring, least common denominator, greatest common factors and prime factorization.  We started off by taking a review test of what we did last week.  After grading it, I noticed that we still needed to review these concepts.  I have attached worksheets to the back of the test.  These worksheets will be due by Thursday (Dec 15) of this week.

Next week we will continue to move on to adding fractions.

This week we will begin taking a practice writing test in the computer lab.  This practice test will simulate exactly what the testing format will look like.  This is a great opportunity for our students to become familiar with this format before the big Writing Test which will be January 30 or 31.

This Wednesday we will begin working on a new vocabulary format.  Each set of words will be passed out on Wednesday and then tested on Tuesday.  Each week students will watch a vocabulary rap as a class and then have a worksheet packet that will be due on Tuesday, so that they have the packet to study from all week long.   You can expect to see this same format when we return in January.  Be sure to have your child study all week long with a big review on Monday nights.

Again please contact me through e-mail if you have any questions.  eretzer@washoeschools.net

December 5-9, 2011

Welcome back!  I hope all of you enjoyed your break.
I am excited to read the writing you did over break.
Parents, you can expect to see different writing
samples coming home and are encouraged to help your child with
their editing and revising.  There is no "right" way to do this process.
You know your child the best.  If there are spelling errors you can
help them by just correcting the error yourself or circling each word
and having your child look it up in the dictionary. My main goal
is that your child is working through the process and becoming more
and more comfortable with writing.

In math we will begin working on adding and subtracting fractions.  I will be posting links to help
with the homework.

Students should have their third Great American Awards done and be working
on their fourth to be on track.  I am sure there will be many presentations during
the month of December.

We will be attending Kids court on January 24.  If you plan on attending please make sure
that you have your volunteer form in the office.  Remember a new form needs to be done
every school year.  You can check with Margaret in the office to make sure your form is
up-to-date 775-425-7710.  All forms needs to be turned in a minimum of two weeks before our field trip.
I will be sending home more information on this trip as it gets closer.
